Pizza Possum (#)

This last year, I built a small game with Friedemann. We set ourselves a tight schedule and were originally hoping to ship something within 6 months. It took us a few months extra to settle on the right concept. It’s a nice feeling to compress development into a short period like that. It forces you to discard a lot of the conceptual doubts that come with a longer project and just keep pushing forward.

It’s not quite decided when and where the game will be released, so keep an eye out!

Cloud Gardens Is Out Now! (#)

The game I’ve worked on for the past two years is out now on Steam! It grew out of the plant simulation that I salvaged from my previous project, Garbage Country.

Week 1

Okay, here we are again! It’s 2019. Shit. Where should I go with this project? In the past I always knew which thing to add next to a game, but now not so much. I’ve also been ‘out of it’ for too long I think.

Going to start up the game and write down what I feel about it. Trying to stay ‘zoomed out’ to help me decide on a direction for the next two months. I still want to work towards a prototype release by the end of that.

⭐️ Digging in the trash and seeing different things fall out is actually cool.

⭐️ Holding a bunch of items and running around with them is also fun to see.

⭐️ The unrealistic lighting is kinda neat.

⭐️ Seeing stuff built in the world that is still there, being overgrown. Cool.

➖ Clicking a plant to remove is just finnicky.

➖ The world is big and empty

➖ Putting down soil containers and throwing a seed on them is terrible.

Durability

I have to add a durability system I guess. What are the requirements for this?

Creep affects durability in a deterministic and predictable fashion. Durability decreases at a maximum rate regardless of how much creep is attached.

Durability objects are updated on a slow timer that applies the capped accumulated damage. That way, only a maximum of damage is applied each tick (perhaps 5 minutes or so)

Blocks that are cleared of creep are repaired completely. Removing creep is the only maintenance required, no additional repairing is needed.

Falling debris damages blocks, instantly affecting durability. Damage is automatically repaired over time (like above).

Week 28

OKAY it is time for plants.

There were already vines but they were kind of ‘hard-coded’ so I’d never be able to have different species running different behavior and such.

So first I started off creating some kind of JSON database of plant properties and stuff, but now I’m leaning towards just including all that data inside of Unity in a bunch of prefabs. That will give me visual editing out of the box and not having to deal with a bunch of JSON reading and asset finding.

Then I have to hook up model and texture variations, which should be quite doable. Prerequisite that I can preview them nicely in blender.

STATIC Node Data (scriptableobject)

Week 2 & 3

Fixing player prediction and movement on stairs. Using a rigidbody simulation for player movement has advantages and disadvantages.

Pros

Players can collide and will push eachother back

Players can be affected by other physics objects

Cons

Rigidbodies will slide down hills which is not desired behavior for players. A lot of additional mechanisms are needed to make players behave predictably

Created variable jump height using the “Cap Velocity on Button Up” method.
